Ship and Barge Dock – Mississippi River at Baton Rouge
ExxonMobil Refinery

Berths 1, 2, 3, & 4 Dock Congestion Reduction Project

Structural condition surveys, analysis and design to upgrade Berths 1, 2, 3, & 4 to handle 3-800 FT 96,000 DT tankers and barges on inside simultaneously. Original facility constructed in 1940's. Construction included extension of Berth 1, the addition of a downstream turning dolphin to allow barge tows safe access to inside face of berths, increasing capacity of tanker mooring hooks, extension of barge fleeting dolphins, addition of bridge access to captive barge facility. 1992, 1993, 1994.

Overall Dock Maintenance Program

Annual structural condition surveys; above & below water metal thickness readings, planning and prioritizing repairs; upgrading mooring equipment and structure to handle large ships; design strengthening of dock structure, concrete deck surveys, reinforcing steel corrosion repairs, deck sealing, 1990 to present.

Berth 5 Condition Survey and Repairs

Field condition survey, structural analysis and design of emergency repairs supporting trusses, bents, and drift-fender in Berth 5, 1990. Construction documents for upgrades in Phases, 1990, 1991, 1992.

Dock Office Protection Dolphin - Liquid Logistics Project

Analysis and design of dolphin to withstand low velocity, ninety degree impact of barges inside of refinery dock at intersection with dock operations office, extension of fender system and installation of Chem Plant Loading Arm; 1995.

Upstream Barge Berthing & Mooring Dolphin

Analysis and design of new replacement dolphin to handle berthing and mooring of coker feed barges at the upstream end of refinery dock. The replacement dolphin designed for berthing and mooring 4 loaded barge coker feed tow; 1996.

Berth1 thru 5 Major Maintenance Improvement Project

Structural condition surveys, analysis, design, risk assessments, repair prioritization, and construction sequencing for replacement of corroded steel with efficient bracing arrangements for installation during continuous tanker operations. Thermal spray coatings and pile cathodic protection jackets designed for piles to remain in service indefinitely. Construction accomplished over several years of low water seasons starting in 2010.

Xylene Project - Loading Arm & Hoist Towers

New hose handling hoist / light towers and support for Xylene loading arm, 1996.

Barge Mooring Improvement Project

Engineering analysis and design to provide safe barge Mooring & access on Outside of Berths 1,2,3,4,5 and Inside of Berths 1,2,3 for high water and low water considerations. Approx 744 barge mooring points provided; 2000 – 2001

Berth 5 Tanker Breasting & Mooring Upgrade

To enable safe mooring of Panamax and Handymax tankers positioned at the loading arms and clusters in Berth 4 during the full range of river conditions, design of pile supported dolphins on the inside of Berth 5 and strengthening of the existing Berth 5 structure was performed. To enable concurrent loading of tanker on the arms in Berth 4 and an Aframax tanker on the arms in Berth 2-3, mooring hooks in the vicinity of the Berth 3 - Berth 4 connection were upgraded. 2022.

Coke Terminal Facility – Mississippi River at Baton Rouge

ExxonMobil - Upstream of Baton Rouge Refinery

Structural and marine condition survey of the original Solvay shipping terminal constructed in 1935, converted for coke handling use by ExxonMobil. Survey of floating dock barge exhibiting flooding 19 of 32 compartments due to leaks, design of structural repairs and fender protection for existing an upstream 11 bent structure. Based on evaluation of stability of the dock barge performed by sub-consultant naval architect, replacement of the floating dock barge was planned. Design of structural connections of replacement barges, monopiles with berthing fender element connections to replacement barges, and a cargo barge pulling system were performed; 2020.

Grane Terminal Facility - Mississippi River at Convent, Louisiana

Zen Noh Grain Terminal Loading Facility

Construction of a mail ship dock structure supporting berthing, mooring, and loading equipment for Panamax freighters; construction of a main barge dock structure, continuous fendering on the inside face of the main dock and along both faces of the barge dock to allow parallel unloading of 2 barges in the barge slip and barge fleeting on the landside of the barge dock; turning dolphins at the upstream and downstream exposures of the barge loading slip; access bridges and lift spans from land to the ship and barge structures; 2017

Coke Handling Gantry - Analysis and repairs of gantry handling ship and barge traffic. Analysis involved plate theory following a number of failures in tower legs; 1974.

Coke Dock Underpinning - Design of emergency repairs to support dock structure following riverbank slide failure; 1973.

Coke Dock Improvement Plan - Preparation of overall dockimprovement plan for existing facility handling raw coke and calcined coke. Study covered fendering systems for barge and ship usage; barge pulling, mooring, and breasting systems; ship and barge access systems; barge hatch cover handling means; improved maintenance lifting systems; evaluation of approach ramp capacity; 1977 Engineering Study.
